Building Careers in Construction
Why Train as an Apprentice with ABC South Texas?
Training as an apprentice with ABC South Texas opens the door to a proven, affordable, and highly respected career pathway. Our programs are fully approved by both the State of Texas and the U.S. Department of Labor, ensuring that every apprentice receives industry-recognized training backed by rigorous standards. Apprentices can choose from five in-demand trades — carpentry, sheet metal, electrical, pipefitting, and plumbing — and gain paid, hands-on experience from day one. Unlike the cost of a traditional college education, apprenticeship training comes with virtually no personal expense, making it an accessible option for individuals looking to build a successful career without debt.
ABC South Texas is also proud to support veterans by honoring Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits, allowing eligible apprentices to receive a tax-free stipend while completing their program. Beyond the classroom and the jobsite, apprentices benefit from building a strong professional network, learning from and working alongside some of the most skilled construction professionals in South Texas. Participants may even earn college life credit hours along the way, further enhancing their long-term opportunities. Through this comprehensive approach, ABC South Texas apprentices gain the knowledge, experience, and connections needed to grow into confident, capable leaders in the construction industry.
Why Should Employers Work with ABC South Texas Apprentices?
Partnering with ABC South Texas apprentices gives employers a direct advantage in a competitive industry where the demand for skilled workers continues to rise. Our apprenticeship programs provide immediate access to a reliable pool of motivated applicants, eliminating the cost and time associated with traditional recruitment efforts. Because our programs are approved at both the state and federal levels, employers can dispatch registered apprentices to job sites with confidence while also meeting prevailing wage requirements when necessary.
Apprenticeship training is also a powerful tool for improving workforce stability. Employees who are actively developing their skills through a structured program experience higher morale, greater loyalty, and a clearer sense of career direction, which helps reduce turnover and its associated costs. Employers benefit from a more diverse and flexible workforce with a broader range of trade-specific abilities, allowing teams to adapt more easily to project demands.
By participating in a structured training system, apprentices tend to be more motivated and productive, contributing directly to stronger jobsite performance. All apprentices in our program are trained using the nationally respected NCCER curriculum, ensuring consistent, high-quality instruction across every trade. For employers, partnering with ABC South Texas apprentices means gaining a skilled, dependable, and future-ready workforce.

Contractors Apprenticeship Trust Mission
The Contractors Apprenticeship Trust (CAT) is a 501C(3) non-profit education entity managed by Associated Builders & Contractors, Inc. – South Texas Chapter to better facilitate interaction within the industry. The CAT was initially created to provide a variety of education programs for individuals currently employed in the construction industry, attract unskilled individuals from the high school level, military and the general through educational programs such as apprenticeship, continuing education, management, specialized task training, safety, and other activities designed to improve at all levels their skill sets to ensure they become productive and safe employees within the construction industry. Outreach efforts include counselor tours, career fairs and industry speakers to promote the needs of the industry and the importance of construction in our modern society.
The Contractors Apprenticeship Trust is sustained primarily by tuition and attendee fees. However, donations and sponsorships are available to help with the costs associated with graduation ceremonies, materials, equipment, instructor fees, training and code books, scholarships and the Local Craft Competition which qualifies apprentices for the ABC National Craft Championship. By partnering with CAT, you will be making a profound impact on the lives of multiple generations. This decision will positively affect the lives of individuals, families and the simply put, the future of the construction industry.
If you are interested in donating or sponsoring CAT activities, please contact Shalon LeBlanc: shalon@abcsouthtexas.org.
